Feb. 27, 2019 Weekly Update

Conditions for practice on Saturday were a little breezier than forecast.  JV sailed some practice races in the morning then took a break in the afternoon. Varsity worked on roll tacking and the “ease, hike, trim” mantra.  The varsity also ran a series of short races to determine who would sail the new boat in the regatta on the following day. Sailor and Gia earned the honors.  Also on Saturday boats were loaded onto trailers for the trip to the Palm Beach Sailing Club the next day.

Conditions on Sunday were variable, mostly in the 10-15 range but dropping to near 5 occasionally for the four race regatta.  Since the venue is very close to Lake Worth Inlet, there is a tidal current present as well, adding to the challenge.  Coach Connor reports that everyone hung tough. In the BIC class Ben had a rough start and first race but then sailed consistently to take third place.  Pia sailed her first regatta, finishing three races. Unfortunately William had an equipment failure that put him back on the beach.  In the 420 fleet, Sailor and Gia as well as Thomas and Jackson gave it their all.

The regatta marked the debut of our newest 420.  It is an outstanding boat and drew quite a bit of attention.  Our plan is to use it strictly for competition to minimize wear and tear.  The boat will be named Phantom in honor of Jon Williams who has been a driving force for youth sailing.  He and his wife Edy have graciously donated time, equipment and money to the program but are very modest about it.  We would absolutely not be where we are without them.  The name was chosen as a subtle reference to the fact that Jon flew over 160 combat missions in F-4 Phantoms while preserving their under-the-radar presence.

Looking ahead, there will not be practice on 3/2 as all of the coaches will be on spring break.  Jack and Paige will forego their second spring break weekend to run practice on 3/9.  BCPS spring break is a long one, from 3/15-25.  Typically our families are away for at least part of the time but we intend to run practice for those that are here.

Regatta #3 is 3/24 in Jensen Beach, #4 is 4/27 in Vero Beach and #5 is 4/28 in Ft. Pierce.  That will be the last sailing for us this semester since the coaches will be wrapping up their school year.  Around that time we will have our end of the year banquet. Once again Kara Mathews will be taking the lead on organizing it so please help her put on a good celebration of the good year that we have had.
