From the coaches with some additions…
Saturday morning, the Apollo and Mercury groups set out to the river with no wind anywhere to be seen. They worked on discovering new ways of propelling the boat with no wind. Between rocking the boat, paddling, sculling or other various methods, they managed to get around a small race course.
In the afternoon, the Artemis group was able to sail around with some wind in their sails. We worked on roll tacks while in light air as well as some more practice starts and races. During our debrief, we went over some racing strategy talking about puffs and lulls, lifts and headers, as well as how to read tell tales. The Gemini group team raced with 2v2 teams sailing against each other. There is a ton of strategy and wind awareness in team racing so it is a fantastic learning exercise.
Space Coast sailing will not be holding practice on Saturday (11/30/19) due to the holidays. We plan to still compete in the Palm Beach regatta on Sunday (12/1/19).
After that the road warriors will be at regattas for two more weekends. Dec 7 & 8 Ben, Ethan and Pia are sailing O’pen skiffs in a Jr. Olympic regatta at Jensen Beach. Jackson and Thomas will sail a 420 there. It will be their first regatta with spinnaker and trapeze. Both fleets will be large with very talented sailors.
The following weekend on Dec. 15 will be regatta #5 of the Florida East Coast Youth Series in Ft. Pierce. It will be the final event of the semester. Best of luck to all of the sailors!
On the social side, the team end of the season Holiday party on December 10 at MYC from 6-8pm. The SCS Wine and Beer Fundraiser is January 23.
We hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving holiday!
