Here’s hoping everyone had an enjoyable and tasty Thanksgiving! The last three day have been mixed bag of weather. Saturday practice was cancelled for the holiday. The breeze was calm to light so it was a good day to take a break. On Sunday Ben, Ethan and Pia went to West Palm Beach and sailed BICs in regatta 4 of 5 in the Florida East Coast Series while Sailor and Gia sailed in the 420 class. Winds were approximately 12-14 with higher gusts and the air was a little cooler. Ben sailed pretty consistently but was one point behind going into the last race. He sailed his heart out and beat who he needed to to win the regatta and most likely has first place for the series wrapped up. Congratulations to Ben! Notice in the picture his size compared to the others on the podium. In the other picture, Ben leads Sailor and Gia around the reaching mark. Today it was pretty breezy and even cooler for the Dolphin practice so Coach Pete planned to keep them in the canal where it is protected but constrained and therefore challenging.
Next weekend, Ben Ethan, Pia, Jackson and Thomas will travel to Jensen Beach for the Jr. Olympic regatta. For Thomas and Jackson, it will be their first spinnaker regatta. The fleets will be large and very competitive. Sending five sailors to this regatta is a high-water mark for our program and we should all be very proud of our team.
Also next weekend on 12/7, here at home, is the MYC mermaid regatta for any female sailors that would like to sail on big boats. As part of the regatta, there will be learning opportunity called Mermaid School on Thursday 12/5. If someone does want to sail, let me know and I should be able to arrange a crew position.
The SCS end of the semester Holiday party will be Tuesday evening 12/10 at MYC from 6-8. Kara Mathews is organizing the event so a fun time is assured.
The following weekend practice will be held on Saturday then SCS is back on the road Sunday to Ft. Pierce for the final regatta of the series. Coach Connor will be organizing the trip. That regatta will be our last event of the semester except for the Dolphins who will sail on Monday 12/16.
Looking ahead to January, practice will resume on 12/11 and the new year festivities will continue with the SCS Wine and Beer Fundraiser on January 23. It looks like we’ll end the year with a bang and get going quickly again after the holidays.
